Bottleneck Cove Via Shearwater

Bottleneck Cove's name seems obvious.

Another fuel stop day for us, so we headed out first for the short trip to Shearwater. Normally a busy hub of fishing activity, the docks were eerily deserted.

Wheelock Passage near Shearwater.

We resumed our progress North just as the rest of our friends were rounding the bend. Through Lama Passage, we entered Milbanke Sound. This can be rough with swell and there are other longer but more protected routes to take, but the forecast looked good and we weren’t disappointed. Gentle swells and the sun greeted us.

We unfurled the trusty Code 0 in 12 knots of wind and enjoyed a broad reach in the sunshine across the sound to the entrance of Finlayson Channel.

A receding squall ahead gradually revealed layers of humped hills in Finlayson Channel.

Our traveling companion Ralph on Rubicon alerted us to a humpback whale about a half a mile ahead of us. We slowed and kept a sharp eye out, seeing a couple of blows ahead. Suddenly, the huge whale erupted from the water and shot up vertically into the air, clearing the water with its tail. Executing a half twist, it crashed back to the water on its side. (Sorry, no picture!) We didn’t see it again after that. The entrance to our anchorage is narrow and shallow and difficult to find along the tree-lined shore until you are almost upon it.

Bottleneck Cove is aptly named! Once through, it opens up into another spectacular protected cove begging to be explored.
