After the big trip around Cape Caution, we got to Pruth Bay at 12:15pm. This is one of the places we had wanted to stop on our way back from Alaska in 2021. We launched the dinghy and went to explore the Hakai Institute property and walk the trails over to the ocean side of Calvert Island.
The property at the Hakai Institute was once owned by a fishing camp. They sold it to the Tula Foundation, who have turned it into a scientific outstation for research related to conservation of this special area of the BC Coast. https://hakai.orgThe grounds are lovely and well cared for, and there are a few buildings, green houses, and yurts. The trails we took to North and West Beaches were well-maintained and fun to walk/hike. The West Beach trail goes up and over a hill, going along a fresh water pond for awhile. In all, we walked 3.1 miles out and back on these. It felt good to stretch our legs. We saw an Anna's Hummingbird up close on this walk.
The path through the woods to the beach, over the soggy muskeg.
Arriving at West Beach. Beautiful warm, soft sand...
Lots of driftwood...
The shoreline.
The tide went way out.
Rugged and beat up from winter storms...
This is how big West Beach is! Notice the people walking in the distance on the right side of the photo.
I love this shot...
Hiking over to North Beach.
North Beach. It felt so warm and humid, as if we walked out onto a Hawaiian beach! There were wolf prints here.
View from North Beach.
Starfish on the dock piling.
This guy was up on his toes! We wondered if he was in a mating pose, because we saw it release some milky substance, maybe sperm. We later confirmed this with someone in the know.
The view from Dog Star to the east, from Pruth Bay. All clear now.
Lovely photos. Thank you for sharing!
